About the Library

The mission of the Alfred R. Goldstein Library is to promote the intellectual, creative, and personal development of all members of the Ringling community by providing access to high-quality information resources, instruction that guides the effective and ethical use of these resources, and a collaborative environment that fosters meaningful and productive connections across the College.

Information about the Library and links to the catalog, databases, and other resources are available on the Library webpage. Students can access the library catalog and electronic resources both on and off campus. Electronic resources contain copyrighted material provided under specific license agreements, and a Ringling username and password are required to access these materials.

Hours Of Operation

The Alfred R. Goldstein Library building, computer labs, and library services hours are:

Monday - Thursday: 8 a.m. – 11 p.m.

Friday: 8 a.m. – 8 p.m.

Saturday: 10 a.m. – 8 p.m.

Sunday: 12 noon – 11 p.m.

Summer and break hours will be posted.

Library Collections

Goldstein Library is a uniquely curated Arts Library for Ringling students and faculty. The library’s physical collections include over 70,000 books, 140 current print periodicals, 10,000 DVDs/Blu-rays, 200 videogames, 75 boardgames and a Special Collections Center with a growing collection of artists’ books/projects, rare books, and ephemera. The library also provides access to approximately 20,000 online journals and 125 online databases that provide access to eBooks, newspapers, images, films, audio & video assets and a range of other materials. In addition, students may recommend items for purchase and request items held by other libraries through Interlibrary Loan.

Checking Out & Renewing Material

Students may have up to 40 items checked out at any time. Books are checked out for 21 days, bound periodicals for five days, current periodicals for one day, DVDs/Blu-rays for three days, and games (video or physical) for seven days. A valid Student ID is required at all times to check out Library materials.

Students may renew items up to three times if no items are overdue and there are no holds on their account. Renew Library material by phone at 941.359.7587 or online at the library website by clicking on “My Account.”

Ringling College Graduates have lifetime check out privileges for all print materials.

Library Services

In addition to our growing collection, the library provides a range of services to Ringling students. These include research consultations, course research guides, course reserves, interlibrary loan, study rooms, computer labs, scanners, printers, and loanable equipment. Instruction in Library Use, Research, and Copyright

Come meet with a Research and Instruction Librarian! During research consultation appointments, these Librarians help with navigating the library's collection of books, media, and eResources; finding credible sources for assignments, developing search strategies, managing citations, and demystifying research.

Study & Conference Rooms (25Live Room Reservation System)

Study and conference rooms are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Students are not permitted to reserve study rooms for specific times.

Reserves

Items placed on reserve by course instructors (including textbooks) are usually on Open Reserve, located on a shelf on the library’s 1st floor that can be independently accessed. Items on Open Reserve can be used in the library without the need to check them out. Most of these items can also be checked out for a short period of time. Circulation periods are 3-hours, 1-day, 3-days, 7-days and “in library use only,” as decided by the instructor.

The Closed Reserve section is maintained at the Circulation Desk for faculty to place personal materials and library materials on restricted use for students. Students may inquire about these items at the Circulation Desk.

Equipment

The library has two computer labs with both PC and Mac workstations There are two color printers and six scanners available on the first and second floors near the open computer labs. Digital scan rooms on the first and second floors include large format scanners which can accommodate paper sizes up to 18” x 24”.

Various equipment items are available at the circulation desk for check-out or in-library use. These include portable light boxes, DVD and Blu-ray players, Wacom styluses, assorted laptop chargers, and headphones. (Note: headphones do not need to be returned.)

Brizdle-Schoenberg Special Collections Center

The Brizdle-Schoenberg Special Collections Center preserves and provides access to rare, unique, and archival materials that support learning and research at Ringling College. The collection includes artists' books, fine press and letterpress publications, rare books, archival collections, prints, zines, ephemera, as well as the institutional archives documenting the history of Ringling College. Students are encouraged to explore the collections for class projects, research, creative inspiration, and/or personal interest. The Special Collections Center also offers exhibitions, instructional sessions, workshops, and research consultations. Visits are available by appointment or during posted open hours.
